One More Thing Eromanga Sensei Doesn’t Earn

I’ve already gone in-depth about how I believe the characters of Eromanga Sensei do not earn their titles of “published authors”, mainly because barely a sliver of their writing is shown to the audience for which they can use to judge for themselves. I’m not going to know you’re a “good” writer by simply someone telling me so, and that sentiment has been the heaviest stress on my suspension of disbelief from start to finish of this anime. That all being said, Izumi and the others not truly displaying their writerly skills while expecting the audience to accept their status as “published authors” isn’t the only thing Eromanga Sensei failed to earn. Final Thoughts on Anime Spring 2017

[Sorry it’s been so long since my last post. I had some friends come over from out of state, and while it was fun spending time with them, they totally fucked over my routine. I’m getting back into the groove again, and hopefully I can stay there once I do. Anyway, let’s talk about seasonal anime!]

Sakura Quest

By far my most disappointing show of the season, Sakura Quest on its best day has been…fine. Just fine. Not even good, but not really bad, and I don’t plan on dropping it anytime soon. The thing is, as I explained in a post a little while back, its characters haven’t earned their place. They’re poorly establish and offered me barely any connection to latch onto, each failing to feel like they serve a legitimate purpose, their positions in the show appearing as if just pulled out of a magician’s hat. They have minimal personalities, little to no focused plot lines, and when they do have a sliver of something that could be considered “unique”, they’re allowed no time to let that shine. A Saekano Flat Review (Season 2)

Coming away from the second season of Saekano -How to Raise a Boring Gilfriend-, I felt something that I haven’t legitimately felt in a long time. Amplified by the uncertainty of a season 3 (because I was honestly a little surprised we got a season 2), the end of Saekano Flat left me with a joyful emptiness, the kind where the only bitterness I feel comes from the desire I have to see more. I have been so utterly enthralled by what Tomoya and his team have accomplished, and now I’m even more excited for the future holds given the change that has occurred (trying not to spoil it). Eromanga vs Saekano: Show, Not Tell

I know I said last time that I’d have another Persona feature to share before I go back to writing about anime, but I figured because this season is almost over, I should touch upon the things that I wanted to before they become no longer “currently airing”. Just know you haven’t heard the last from me in regards to Persona 5, a.k.a. the best game ever made with best girl ever made (Makoto).

Fictional shows about the process of creation have always been somewhat of a comfort food of mine. While usually not as educational as a full-on documentary, mocumentaries and slices of life with a focus on creative work life have always piqued a very special intrigue in me. I consider myself a creator after all (though not quite an accomplished one, yet), so it does feel valuable to me to see things like the struggles of creation/production, and also feels incredibly entertaining when seen through the lens of a more focused, idealistic perspective. Confidants and Striking Visual Novel Aesthetics (Persona 5)

There are two basic halves of gameplay in Persona 5. Palace exploring and turned-based fighting are the first half, something I touched upon a couple days ago. The other half is visual novel; the act of reading along and making dialogue choices that’ll affect you positively or negatively in regards to your growing strength needed to progress though the main plotline. Of course, there are minigames and the like sprinkled throughout the game, but for the most part when you’re not stealing hearts in the metaverse, you’re conversing with your friends. Palaces and Persona 5: A Vital Improvement in the Series

When it comes to video games, I must admit that I care more for games with a focus on storytelling and aesthetics far more than ones that exist to be an entertaining challenge. Back in my youth I used to talk to my friends about the latest, greatest video games I’ve been playing. I would go on and on about how thrilling a campaign was or how immersive a world felt, and for the most part my friends would at the very least feign intrigue. Costumed Symbolism in Persona 5

The Persona series has always been rich in symbolism, showing off its vast, almost encyclopedic knowledge of random culture and mythology by infusing them into most every aspect of the game. From the designs and names of each individual persona to the less subtle random school trivia questions thrown your way, interesting facts and references can be found everywhere. The most meaningful places where you can find these allusions however, would have to be in the costume and persona designs of The Phantom Thieves. Continue reading
